ABOUT US

Nestled amongst the leafy Northern suburbs and central to most areas in the Johannesburg area, lies Emmarentia Dam which hosts Emmarentia Sailing Club (ESC).

Emmarentia Dam is a particularly clean dam and perfectly safe for recreational water sports such as sailing, canoeing and swimming. In fact, because it is one of the cleanest dams in the country, many people use the dam for Midmar Mile training.

The dam enjoys good and calm weather year round, is shielded from four sides from the most severe weather, and generally has light to moderate winds, which makes it excellent for water activities.

ESC is affiliated to, and recognised by, South African Sailing (SAS) and is located in the north-east corner of Emmarentia Dam on 30-32 Louw Geldenhuys Drive. It is opposite the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and can be reached from the nearby Barry Hertzog Drive and Beyers Naude Drive.

The Club convenience and setting makes it particularly popular among families with young children and teenagers. It caters for a variety of dinghy sailing classes, including Laser, Mirror, Topper, Dabchick, 0-9r, Optimist and Windsurfer with a few others in Open Class. Club boats are available for hire for those without their own boat.

A lot of ESC members are active sailors throughout Gauteng and the country and have participated in various Class National and World Championships over the past decades. Some members are working to become fully accredited sail instructors with SAS. A Youth and Adult Sailing Programme are available on a wait list basis. Currently under development is a program to facilitate disabled sailing.

There are lively social events, currently set up mainly during May to August posted on the Club calendar so check this out . They sport a varied program of talks, water sports videos, light supper food available, bar, raffle, kids movie and a family orientated atmosphere.
